The Skints
The Skints are a Reggae/ska/rock band from London. They are currently signed to record label Bomber Music. The band has toured regularly since 2008 and has supported the likes of punk ska idols Less than Jake and similar genre band The King Blues. They formed in 2005 as students at Woodbridge High School after two years of experimenting with sound and changing members of the band they settled with the final lineup in 2007.The bands first ‘publicity’ came from playing at a pub in Walthamstow, they were heard by Radio One Executive Producer Rhys Hughes, when three of their members were only 16. Soon the Skints songs were heard on Radio one.

Journalistic Writing exercise 3

Marmozetes Who are they? The Marmozetes are a quintet from Bradford. They first formed in 2007 and were often compared to Pop punk band Paramore. It’s hard in today’s society to not be compared to Hayley Williams if a band have a female singer. The Marmozetes have been highly praised by Rocksound Magazine and Kerrang magazine plus more. The truth is they are so far away from pop-punk. Marmozetes prove to have their own sound by pushing the boundaries with guitar sounds and the occasional screamo. They sure do show attitude and front woman Becca Mckintire is no pop- punk princess. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled this band are looking promising.

Journalistic writing exercise part 1

Modestep
Modestep are an electronic rock/dubstep act from London. They formed in 2010 and are quickly becoming known as the British version of Pendulum. Modestep is in fact made up of two brothers Tony and Josh Friend. They amazed everyone during their set at Download festival 2011.They began work on their debut album in January 2011 releasing their first single ‘feel good’. Another track called Bite The Hand was released and the single reached number 5 on the independent releases chat and number 5 on the dance chart. Modestep were becoming noticed more and more, by July 3^rd the new single ‘sunlight’ passed 1 million viewers within four days. They made the Radio 1 A-list and were at number 16 in the UK charts.
If this is what they have achieved since their debut album then its pretty sure Modestep have a lot more to live up to. They will be on tour around the UK supporting welsh rockers, Lostprophets in April. New album Evolution theory is due to be released this May.

Battle of the bands 03/03/12

Six rounds, one final, only one winner.

If you’re a music lover and have nothing to do this Saturday then head down to Huddersfield Student Union for the very healthy competition that is Battle Of The Bands.

Presented to you once a year by Revive entertainment Huddersfield Student Union plays host to Battle Of The Bands. After six rounds the final has hit town. Round one to six have taken place over the last 6 Tuesdays in order for the one big final event and the extremely tough decision on the winner.

The event is sponsored by Dawsons Music and Summer Saturnalia and gives every band an opportunity to do what they love whether they’re signed or unsigned. Students from RadioHudd have also taken the time out to keep the crowd entertained with music between bands and introducing who is playing and rules of the voting.

There has been a total of thirty four bands throughout the competition. Two bands were forced to drop out. At £2 each round it’s a very affordable event. The winner gets £300 for Dawsons music store plus the winner and runner up get slots at Summer Saturnalia Festival In Yorkshire. Theres some excellent bands that have played and tonights the toughest decision yet. Over 2000 people have attended in the last six rounds. - Richard Ripley, one of the event organisers.

Huddersfield is bringing its very own special event to town this Friday. The one and only Jason James from Bullet For My Valentine is taking a night off band practice to bring his DJ set to Camel Club. If you’re a fan of metal and rock then this is the night for you.  Bullet for my valentine are a multimillion album selling band from Bridgend in South Wales. They were originally formed under the name Jeff Killed John and covered Nirvana and Metallica songs before signing a 5 album deal with Sony BMG. They are constantly praised by the likes of Kerrang! Magazine and have had numerous festival slots each year at Download Festival. The band are part of the Cardiff music scene including bands like Lostprophets, The Blackout and Funeral For A friend.

Jay will be arriving around midnight to do a two hour DJ set so take the opportunity to come down early as it will be packed. It is £4 entry with offers on drinks all night. You might even get the chance to meet him or have a photo as well.

‘Well I didn’t know what to expect but the guys have come down a few times and recommended it. When I got here I expected a small village with no atmosphere but honestly it’s one of the best places in the country to visit and the night life, well I think you’re all mental’ –Jason James.

Camel also hosts other nights throughout the week in fact the only nights it’s closed are Sunday’s and Tuesday’s. There is Funday Monday which allows access with fancy dress. Bedlam on a Friday which is alternative, pop punk and metal. Finally there’s Saturday nights which is nothing but the 90’s.

Adele Orbituary (in class assignment)

For our assignment in our Journalistic Writing class we were doing about Orbituary's we were given an example of a celebrity that is alive and had to write an Orbituary as if they had recently passed away.

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, a woman who was always in the limelight
but shined away when it came to personal life tragically died yesterday afternoon. Adele was in her London house when she tripped walking down the stairs and fell the rest of the way. Her body was found three hours later when there was rising concerns about a missed flight she was due to take earlier on that evening. She died aged 23.
Adele was never afraid to be herself. When appearing on shows such as Johnathon Ross she remained the cockney girl she always was and never forgot her routes even after going Worldwide. Famously saying ‘weight has got nothing to do with my career’ Adele  Openly talked about being comfortable with her weight and shot down any criticism received from magazines and the press saying that she was ‘too big’.
Adele was born in the town Tottenham, North London. Her parents split up when she was just three years old. She began singing age four and had admitted that the spice girls were a major influence regarding her passion for music. Her love for the pop group never faded, famously stating in a 2011 interview that “I love the Spice Girls because they made me who I am’’ Adele and her mother did a lot relocating areas as a young child and finally ended up in West Norwood, South London.
Alongside famous singers Leona Lewis and Jessie J, Adele graduated from the BRIT school for Performing Arts & Technology in May 2006. Little did she realise how famous she would become. In 2006 3 songs were uploaded by a friend onto Myspace. She was then landed a record deal with XL Recordings, an independent label. The first song she released was called ‘Hometown Glory’ and everything could only get better.
Her first album 19 was released early 2008 and single ‘Chasing pavements’ became number two in the charts where it remained for 4 weeks. From then on Adele started to get noticed. After trying to break America a few times and not succeeding it was an in fact an excellent appearance on Saturday night live that boosted what would become her future career.
There are numerous mentions in the Guinness Book Of World Records.  Having two albums 19 and 21 she is the first artist to sell more than 3 million copies in the UK within the space of a year. After winning the very first Critic’s Choice award at the BRIT’S Adele became no stranger to winning awards and received 47 awards out of 102 nominations at worldwide award ceremonies. In the UK alone second album 21 has spent more weeks at number one slot than any album since1971. The album has held the top position longer than any other album since 1990 in the US.  She is the first living artist to keep the two top five hits in the singles and official album chart simultaneously since 1964 when The Beatles entered the charts with ‘I want to hold your hand’ and ‘Please please me’ at number one and two. A week before her death she managed to achieve six Grammy awards but was left fuming when her speech was cut short.
In the past she has admitted in interviews how a lot of the songs are about relationships and heartbreak. It is no secret that it was her ex-boyfriend who inspired the song writing that would become her biggest hits. A moment never forgotten was when she performed ‘Someone like you’ at the Brit Awards 2011 Adele put so much of herself into the song she ended up crying.
Adele preferred to keep her career and kept her personal life to herself as much as possible. On the weeks running up to her death she finally opened up a bit more on the love life front. In an interview with Newspapers such as The Sun and Vogue magazine a week before her death she slated rumours about Simon being a married man, that she was extremely happy and that the age gap doesn’t bother her. The relationship she had with her father almost certainly had its downs and he was never forgiven. After this unexpected tragedy it’s safe to say that maybe life is too short to live holding grudges.
Adele had a great career and it will always be remembered as the woman who put her heart into all her songs and never failed to show her true self.  She was a much loved sister and daughter.

Line up While She Sleeps, LetLive, The Blackout, New Found Glory.

Manchester Academy, Manchester 15/02/12

Every year Kerrang brings a line-up of four bands on tour around the UK. Sponsored by Relentless it brings many diverse music fans together in one venue. This year’s tour brings two British and two American bands to the bill.

First up on the bill are While She Sleeps, another of Steel City’s metal bands. They start the night before everyone is even in the venue however prove worthy of the crowds by already opening up a pit. They play a few songs due to be out with the new album this year. Finish with familiar song Crows then leave the crowd waiting for LetLive.

Who’s frontman Jason Butler certainly lives up to his reputation of being number one rock star (according to Kerrang magazine.) There is passion and high energy as soon as they storm the stage into the first song. Completely abandoning his microphone half way through a song Butler climbs up the speakers and completely loses himself in the music. Letlive have lived up the expectations of being unpredictable as a wall of death takes place during the final song. 

Next up are The Blackout who are greeted by a few ‘boos’ as they hit the stage. They certainly warm a few people’s hearts up as they do a cover of Fat Lip. They have a lot to live up for as the replacement band for Sum 41 and open up the pits after the first few songs. Sean smith and Gavin Butler provide the crowd entertainment throughout with banter and giggles between songs. They are quickly becoming one of Britain’s biggest rock bands and do good to not take themselves too seriously.

 In class we were practicing interview questions. Did research and imagined we were set to interview a band. The band we got asked to 'interview' were The Maccabees.

What can fans and people that have never seen you play before expect from you on this current tour?

Now that your Uk tour has finished you plan to take the tour to the EU, back to the Uk tour Austrailia then move on to the U.S how do you manage to fit everything else you enjoy doing into this busy schedule? How do you cope with the stress of it all?

In the charts nowadays it seems to be mainly pop like X-factor How does it feel to be called the ‘saviour of guitar music’ by the BBC?

Back in 2007 when your album colour it in was released it contained a whole song about the wave machine at your local swimming pool. What have been your main influences on your new album Give it to the wild? What has influenced the lyrics?

Any plans for festival slots this year?

What were your thoughts when you started outselling Adele’s 21 album during week of release?

You postponed the new album, from September till January do you feel this might have affected how many were sold?
